Evan and I went fishing in Alaska for a week after he graduated from high school in 2001. We went with his grandfather and several friends and family. One highlight in a week full of them was when Evan caught this 108 lb. halibut. It took about an hour and Evan had to reel him in three times from over 150 feet deep. It was too difficult to put the fish in the boat, so we lashed him to the outside of the boat and drove an hour back to camp. Fishing is sometimes just too metaphorical for real life. Upon our return while Evan was feeling all satisfied and conquering it turned out our friend, Tom, who was on a different boat, caught a halibut that day too…over 250 lbs. Evan could have put his head inside the mouth of that fish. We have laughed about that memory ever since.
